2011 Porsche 918 RSR Detroit Motor Show just sensational with electricity coming from the steering wheel in the “passenger seat“…
The RSR 918 uses a V8 engine pilot RS Spyder, tuned for 563bhp at 10,300 rpm (!). There are two electric motors to the front wheels – they are driven independently toprovide torque vectoring to improve cornering – and maximum power is 767bhp when the driver presses a button to activate the electric motors. It is a six-speed transmission for the V8 catches. The electricity comes from a steering wheel in the “passenger seat” connected to a motor / generator to transform electrical energy into the wheel and vice versa. The wheel spins at 36,000 rpm.
In contrast, the road 918 has a hybrid battery system instead of the wheel. The batteries allow relatively large amounts of energy to be stored, it can do 15 miles of smooth driving in their batteries before the engine starts. The batteries can also be charged by the network.
The RSR uses a steering wheel because, fundamentally, the energy can be obtained inside and outside wheel faster than it can be with the batteries, so kick the electric one corner may be higher. In addition, the flywheel is lighter than batteries.
Currently there is no category of race that the RSR is eligible for 918, but Porsche says Duerheimer is talking with authorities about the establishment of rules to fit the car. “We think there should be a new momentum in the race, the new technologies.”
